5.1 channel audio outputs

Dolby Digital comes in a range of different setups, currently the most popular is the 5.1 configuration. The variety of Dolby Digital channel setups includes,

  • Single centre stand alone. 1
  • Two-speaker stereo - single Left and Right. 2
  • Three speaker stereo - same as above but with an additional centre speaker. 2
  • Two speaker stereo but with a single surround sound speaker. 3
  • Same as above but with three speakers.3
  • Four speakers, but with two surround sound speakers. 4
  • Finally five channel, with right/left/centre, plus right/left surround sound. 5

Now you may all be wondering what does the ".1" refer to?. This is an additional LFE channel. LFE stands for "Low-Frequency Effects" and is usually sent to a subwoofer. So in the vast majority of cinema systems the "0.1" refers to the subwoofer.

I really purchased the "SONY DAV-DZ2302" home cinema system, it comes as a standard 5.1 system with a subwoofer included. Overall I love it, has a hdmi socket, which my screen supports so I can get the best out of all the latest high definition dvd's. My only gripe is the lack of connections included. It only comes with one scart and hdmi socket, and no audio input which is a real drag.
