| The Lord of the Rings DVD Box Set
The Lord of the Rings trilogy has been a resounding success, rivaling the Star Wars trilogy of the late 70's to early 80's. Adapted from the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien, the trilogy is filmed in New Zealand, and features a multinational cast. The box set for each of the three movies, comes with four dvds and a small booklet. The booklet for the 'Fellowship of the Ring' includes an appendices which shows the process of adapting the movie from the book. The boxset dvd's include an extended version of the original movie, with an average of about thirty minutes of extra footage. This covers two dvd's, the third and fourth dvd's covers the usual extras, the making of documentaries, interviews with cast and crew etc. The films were some of the highest grossing in history, all three were within the top fifteen of all time (ofc, these figures were not adjusted for inflation, which may be misleading). They were also a critical success, with thirty Oscar nominations, and seventeen wins. The Lord of the Rings Reviewsmike Said, I currently own all three of the box sets. Would I rate them worth it?, probably not for the average fan of the movie, which I am. I personally prefer to watch the theatrical version of the films, rather than the extended versions. With the exception of the two towers perhaps, because it includes some much needed extra scenes of Saruman's downfall. But, on the whole, the extra thirty minutes tends to make the movies drag too much, they do anyway. And by the time you have finished watching any of the extended versions, you nearly feel like you walked half the way to mount doom. I've only watched one of the documentaries, because I bought the boxsets specifically for the extended versions of the film. It was for return of the king, I actually wish I didn't watch it. It showed how they created all the special effects, with their models etc, and it kind of took away the magic when I watched the films again. Of the films themselves, I must say I like the fellowship the most, just like with the books. The initial chase at the start of the fellowship is heart pounding, the forming of the fellowship insightful, and the beauty and mystery of the misty mountains immense. The ending of the fellowship is a little dull however. I also love the direct sparring of Gandalf and Saruman, something which is sadly lacking in the later films and books. The big battles, golem, horse people etc I did not enjoy as much. Towers and Return are stand out movies, but they do not quite satisfy me like the fellowship. |
